Groups
Rules · optional — keep students apart or together
Select two or more students, then choose whether to keep them apart or together. Rules are saved with the class and apply to every deal — nothing is announced on screen.

How it works
-
1 · Paste
Paste your class list — one name per line, straight from your register. It saves automatically, on your device.
-
2 · Choose
Pick a number of groups, a group size, or pairs. Mark who's absent; add keep-apart or keep-together rules if you need them.
-
3 · Deal
Groups deal out live — present them fullscreen on the projector, re-deal, copy, or print.
Common questions
Is SortMyClass really free?
Yes. No account, no trial, no paid tier. The site may show a small number of ads on this setup screen to cover its costs — never in presentation mode.
Where do the student names go?
Nowhere. Class lists are saved in your own browser on your device and are never uploaded — there's no server that could see them. Once the page has loaded, the deal even works offline. Details on the privacy page.
Can I stop two students from ending up together?
Yes — add a keep-apart rule and every deal respects it, without anything being announced to the class. Keep-together rules do the opposite, for buddy pairs. Rules are saved per class.
What happens with odd numbers?
Remainders are folded into existing groups so nobody is stranded: 26 students in groups of 4 gives four 4s and two 5s — never a leftover pair. Pairs mode makes one three when the count is odd. You see the exact split before dealing.
Does it work on a projector or whiteboard?
That's what it's for: presentation mode shows only the groups, fullscreen and high contrast, sized to read from the back row. Buttons are big enough for interactive whiteboards.
Do I need an account?
No — and you never will. Accounts are permanently out of scope for this tool. Classes live in the browser on the device you use them on.
Student names never leave your device
That's not a slogan, it's the architecture: SortMyClass has no accounts and no database. Your class lists live in your browser's storage, the grouping happens on your computer, and the only thing we can ever see is an anonymous, cookieless page-view count. Read the two-minute privacy page — it's written for humans.
